Thanks to all of you who replied both on and off the list!
 
For clarification, the OE-style filters I have been using are SEALED units, where one has to transfer the brass fittings from the old unit to the new unit whenever it gets changed.  This is not a replaceable-element type of filter.
 
So the obvious choices, besides paying a premium for replacement sealed units, are to convert to the other OE-style replaceable element filter canister or to a remote spin-on filter, which would still be bypass oil flow.
