AND, if the 55-56 door latches are similar to the 57+ ones, you
want to look very carefully at the lower (hidden) star-gear in it, , to
see if its gear teeth are badly worn.

The upper, visible, star gear can look to be in perfect condition,
but that lower guy can be hammered and virtually worthless.

Again, this specifically for the 57+ latches, but the advise remains:
carefully inspect the physical condition of any prospective driver's
side door latch, after it is removed from a car, or if it is being
offered for sale 'loose',  for possibly worn out condition.
