It stays, it's to keep the piston from coming out of the cylinder when bench
bleeding and before installing.

Ok here's one last question. I have a new master cylinder from a 68
big car I believe and on the rear that the rod goes into there is some
sort of retainer clip held on with a screw? Does that stay on or be
removed before bolting it on? Exactly what is it for?
