I wonder if he can bottle some of that magic touch and ship it to Texas? Not dropping the pan would obviously be quicker. Next time I have the pan off, I will look at the retainer and try the factory method when I can see how it works. Heck, I might even learn something in the process. Thanks folks!

I think one aspect is you are working blind and it is hard to visualize what is going on in there with the screwdriver. With the pan off, you can practice and, once you see how the release works, it is easier to do the next time with the drain pan on.
