Re: IML: Need Budd Brake Pads - STAT!

I'm hoping this occurance with the strip threaded caliper is just a "fluke". I said to my mechanic the other day; "I'll bet after this you'll NEVER want to see another Budd brake car!". He said he doesn't mind, he really does have a LOT of patience!

I hate to hear what you have said about calipersonline. I have called and e-mailed them with no replys. I will call again tomorrow. They have my calipers and my money. I could have purchased a pair of rebuilt calipers from Schucks for about $260 including core charge and no shipping, and still owned my original calipers.
Right now I am out $460 and a set of calipers and have nothing .
I was thinking about the silicone fluid, but will probably also go with the DOT4. The only thing I need to do after getting the calipers back is to replace all of the steel lines.

Well, I have been in the process of totally replacing all the brake components on my 67 Chrysler 300 with Budd disc brakes. Got the rotors from the Durabrake reproductions (thanks IMP club!), the calipers from Calipers On-Line, the master cylinder and booster from Hagen's Hiway auto parts, the brake hoses and rear wheel cylinders, the drums and shoes from Advance Auto, and the D-10 pads from Frank Mitchel (of all people).

So far, all the parts have arrived, but there have been problems. The most disappointing is that the re-manufactured calipers from Calipers On-Line had NO threads in one bolt hole. I discussed this with them and they are letting my mechanics heli-coil it. Of course the heli-coil they ordered turned out to be the wrong size. So they re-ordered. Thus far, its been on again, off again with the brakes since early April!! Hopefully it will be finished next week. I'm also replacing all the brake fluid with Valvoline Synthetic DOT 4 fluid. It's better than the DOT 3 stuff, is low moisture absorbing but still compatible with the glycol based brake fluid. All the stuff you have to be careful of for the DOT 5 silicone fluid turned me off to that.

Javier:
I purchased a set of the D10 pads (sounds like a bra size) about a month ago from a small local hole in the wall brake shop that only sells brake parts.
He only had the one set and said that he probably could not get any more.  I think this was just dumb luck that I found them.
However, it might work for you if you could also find such a place?

I have searched on-line and in all the usual places with no luck.

Others have discussed having the old backing plates "re-padded". This is an option if you can find someone to do it. Note that the backing plates are of a very simple design and look as if they are cut out of ca. 1/4 steel plate. They are totally flat. It would not be much of a stretch to get the backing plates fabricated and then re-padded. Of course the cost goes up, but if you gotta have them!!!!!!!

Note as an aside. I am working on the front Budd brakes of my 69 LeBaron and have them completely apart. I was looking at the steering knuckles and the geometry and distance between the upper and lower ball joint positions appears to be identical to the steering knuckles that I have from a 73 Newport and to the steering knuckles from a 76 Gran Fury. What is more interesting is that the Gran Fury has the same knuckle arm set up as the Imperial with the lower ball joint in the lower control arm.  I would bet money that you could use either of these steering knuckles to replace the Imperial Budd brakes.

I know that this is herasey and since there are new rotors and re-sleved calipers available, keeping the Budd brakes is more practical. However, it appears that the pads are the limiting factor now in rebuilding these barkes.

Also note that I have still not heard from calipersonline if they even received my cores or money. Both should have been there one week ago. Getting nervous.
