Re: IML: Imperial gast tank sending units

Rob,
I tried to get it out without removing the tank. There just wasn't enough clearance. Besides, when you drop it to the maximum angle it just kinda comes out anyway. It's alot easier putting the sender back in when the tank is on the ground. You could probably get by without removing the filler neck...there is a good amount of play there but you will probably want to place a jack stand or stool under the rear of the tank to minimize the strain on the neck assembly. If you can remove manifold bolts from the 413, you should be able to do this drunk and with mirrors!!!

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your clear explanation, sounds like stealing candy from a baby :)
Is it also possible to remove the unit without dropping the tank, or is
there simply not enough room to do so?

Otherwise I will give it a try during my next holiday, at the moment I am
driving the car as much as I can. Allthough I must admit that I don't
really need the fuel tank.
My car is running on LPG (or propane as you call it in the US) :)

But I like to have everything working in my car, even the fuel gauge
allthough I don't burn much petrol these days!

All the best,

Robert

Rob,
The only thing easier is putting oil in the engine.
There is a small length of rubber fuel line to disconnect, two hose
clamps. The vent line pulls off, no clamps Two 9/16" J bolts which I cut
off with a hack saw and replaced. The straps are on hooks and easily
removed after emoving the J bolts. The filler neck assembly comes out
with the tank with a little persuasion, pretty easy on mine after sitting
for 27 years. I had mine out in about 15 minutes. The rubber neck retainer
and the filler o rings are pretty easy to get. When you have the tank on
the ground, removing the sending unit is pretty simple. Just turn the
retaining ring using a screw driver and the sender comes right out and
when you reinstall it, it only goes in one way. When you reinstall it,
remember there is a rubber gasket above and below the retaining ring or it
will leak.

The drain plug is a hex (allen) fitting. I think the original used a
gasket but I have an o ring in mine and it doesn't leak. I'll bet you a
Budweiser
you'll have it out in less than 20 minutes. Tom

Hi Tom,

How difficult is it actually to drop the tank of a 60 Imperial?
My sending unit is not working properly and I would like to repair it
but I am a litte afraid when it comes to dropping the tank.
Especially the connection of the filler pipe looks tricky to me..
After all those years the rubber connection will be a little brittle I
guess.

Thanks,

Rob

I just had my sending unit rebuilt by a guy in Ohio. Found him in
Hemmings.
I don't remember the name, but apparently it's not rocket science
Cost
me about $100 and it came back looking new. One day turnaround on the
repair. I dropped the tank one weekend, sent the sender out and
installed it the next weekend. Tom 60 Crown Southampton

I have looked at the construction of the gas tank sending units and
the resistance element appears to be nichrome wire wound around a
circular insulation piece. I suspect the insulation part of the
element is originally a straight piece that can be flexed to a
circular shape after the nichrome wire is wound on it. It might be
possible for someone to repair these. Does the group know of anyone
who has advertised that they can do this?

I was lucky enough about 10 years ago to find probably the last OEM
one on a dealer's shelf in Bellview Washington. A local dealer in
the Dallas
area found it using their computer search capabilities on the
network of dealers. The dealer in Washington sold it to me at the
last listed price of about $29.00 plus shipping. I felt very
fortunate to be able to replace the original unit.

I still have the original gas tank sending unit that came from my
'62,
having saved it just in case someone could rebuild it later.
