Believe me, if you start the engine with the cooler lines disconnected, you'll know immediately whether the fluid is flowing or not. It will flow at a rather high rate.

You're right !! If the tranny shifts as it must shift, don't worry ...  Problem with the cooler lines is that you can't see what is inside when the transmission works ! The oil fittings are far above the level of fluid when the engine is stoped, so, if you check after a while, all the fluid is in the oil pan and you'll have only the fluid which remains in the lines, because the converter valve is "closed" so the oil cooler lines are also "closed".
Maybe with a clear hose, at the radiator ends, trans in D or R and with rear wheel off the floor ?
