Hmmmm .... as it turns out, my 56 Imperial cut out on me two days ago in the
garage. The next day I tried her and she started right up. About a minute
later, while the car was running,  the entire car was filled with smoke that
poured from under the dash. When the smoke cleared and my nerves settled, I
found that the wire from my ignition switch to the flasher was totally fried.
I was thinking bad flasher but now I'm not too sure after reading Phil's
post. Could be the ignition switch? After I eliminated the wire between the
ignition switch and the flasher the car started with no APPARENT problems.
