[FWDLK] My Son, a Learners Permit, and a 59 Desoto

I posted this on the Desotoland message board but wanted to share it here too:

Today my yougest son got his Drivers permit.
This is a kid that has quietly spent hours helping me clean and polish my Desoto. I call him my pit crew at the car shows because he takes care of Dodie, while I mingle and get sunburned. So I planned a special Day for him. I left work a little early and took him to the DMV where he took his test and passed his eye exam. He also stiffed me for the fee lol.
I took him straight to the Desoto. I Started it, backed it out, and asked him if he wanted to drive it. I wish you could have seen the look in his Eyes. I truely believe he felt I would never let him drive it. I had planned just to let him drive it a few feet in the sub division just so he could say the first car he ever drove was a Desoto. I was a nervous wreck but he did wonderful. I found a little section where he could drive in a big triangle basically and much to my surprise he did great! He was so gentile and careful with the car. I could tell it was for respect and love of the old girl. I let him drive through the Sub division and then on to the highway first at 45 then on up to 55. We ended up picking up his older brother from work and put about 10 miles on the Car. My son was through at the time and asked me to drive. I learned a lot about my son today and am very proud of him. I feel good about the future and possibly letting him solo some day. We all know the value of these old cars and mine is basically priceless to me. But the risks tonight were worth every bit of it just to see the look in his eyes and to know we have another Generation that will love and keep our Desotos after we are all gone
John
