Re: [FWDLK] Needed: 57 Dual Point Distributor Vacuum Advance

We have at least 4 old parts stores here in Mena, AR, plus a New Auto Zone.
I deal with the one I have dealt with for over 20 years.
I have lived here for 16 years and before that, would go in with Don Rook to get parts parts for him and my own cars when I was visiting Don.
3 of the other stores I have never been in and the other one I did use because they have a machine shop.
Auto Zone opened 5 years or so ago and I do check with them for some things if my main store does not have it and I need it fast.
Auto Zone also has a lifetime Guarantee on most of their parts, and for some things on old Iron, that's good.

As to my old local owned parts store, I don't need much, but when I walk in I am greeted by name from the owner and older counter folks including Angie.
She has been there for most of the 20 or so years  and is as knowledgeable as any one you know.
She is not afraid to pull out one of their many books if it is not on the computer, to find something.
There are some newer counter folks, and they are being trained to LOOK UP stuff. Love it!
They can have most anything in 1-2 days if not stocked.

The best clerk by far at our local small town NAPA store is a woman in her thirties named Joy.  She knows more than all the other guys put together, and if she doesn't know she'll find out.  The only way to get the ol' grey haired fat guy, Marv, to open a parts book is to put a donut on a fishing line and dangle it over the book.

Or find a parts store that has a good stash of old parts books. Nowadays, if it isn't in the computer, it never existed. Just for fun you can also ask for part for a Datsun. Many folks don't recall it was the early version of Nissan. Not that I drive either.

Same for AMC/Ramblers. The counter guys would ask what company made
them. That is why I like to see a counter person (and airline pilots)
with gray or white hair.

Do what I do, and just walk into any auto parts store and tell them
you need a part for
your DeSoto.  You will swear you just shot them with a Stupid Gun ….  if
you get any
response at all, it will be some minor scratching at the surface about
"having heard of
those”, but all function of parts searching will stop right there !

I think you are on the right track in finding latter-day interchange
numbers.  Don’t even
mention what it fits outside the Forward Look crowd !

   Good luck on your search.

About 13 years ago I went to an All-Mopar Performance swap meet.
The only thing I saw there the vintage I was looking for were a
few First Gen Hemi sparkplug tubes. Just for snits an grins I bought
one and once home I polished it up a lot. It Looked Mighty 'Oh Look,
Shiney stuff' and hung it from the rear view mirror of my Hodge Podge
Dodge 'FrankinTruck'.

One day on a lark while out looking for parts for wifypoo's car I
grabbed the dangling sparkytube and took it in with me.  I asked the
idling parts folks bunched up behind the counter for a gasket for this!
Only One of them knew what it was, and Jups!, it were a gray hair
adorned older gent.
